My name is Josh

I have been creating pictures and telling stories of one kind or another for the past 13 years.

I have always been fascinated by creating narratives through imagery, which is why I enrolled in the documentary photography course at the University of Portsmouth. This is where I learned to see, to be selective, be tasteful and start the development of a style.

After graduating with a first-class degree, I moved to London to work in-house at a designer furniture store. This let me hone my abilities in lighting, set design, and managing studio shoots. It is also where I discovered that moving image was something I could utilise to more acutely describe products to the consumer.

I later had the incredible opportunity to move to Jaipur, India. I worked in factories and studios photographing furniture for another company. This job gave me the chance to work in an environment that could sometimes be high-stress with large and speedy turnarounds. I became adept at creating larger volumes of work, learning how to be maximally efficient while creating the highest quality imagery possible. Alongside the stills output, I had the chance to start working with video as a brand-building tool. I created multiple films explaining the process of different elements of the manufacturing process across the county, utilising the documentary style I have developed during university. I was starting to learn how to balance on the tightrope of creating commercially viable content that was also interesting to watch in and of itself.

Eventually, I moved back to London to focus my efforts on moving image. I landed my first agency job working at the government’s internal creative agency. Here I was able to work on films that were more for public service and raising awareness. In this time, I interviewed Prime Ministers, created campaigns pushing for women’s equality in the workplace, rode in a tank, and photographed the Queen. (I also saw the inside of a lot of prisons and spent more time with Liz Truss than I care to admit.) All of this focused me on creating video that got through to the viewer. I created narratives that made a difference.

After having spent a few years in London, my partner, Lottie, and I got itchy feet and decided to move to Cambodia. Here I was able to more freely create video for companies that needed online content. It was my first move into freelance work. I gained the skills of client management and taking full productions from start to finish, broadening my skills as an all-round producer of content.

The UK called us home again, and I had the opportunity to join another agency, this time based in the world of B2B. This gave me the chance to work with some of the biggest tech companies in the world and raise my game in video production in every way. I was able to use bigger budgets to create more elaborate work and also learned how to manage those budgets to create the best work possible. After a few great years, I was made redundant. It was the best thing that ever happened to me. I had in that time built a network of producers and directors that I could start working with as a full-time freelancer.

Through all of my experience, I have become a well-rounded creator and someone that finds the challenge of telling a story fascinating. Whether it is a reel on Instagram of a full-blown documentary, the concept of telling a story stays the same. It must be engaging. It must be thoughtful. The video must care about the person watching.

I love working with other people who care about what they are about to embark on creating. If you would like to be one of those people, drop me a line. I’d love to hear from you.

I am currently based in Cheltenham and work across the country.
